Remembering the Warsaw Uprising

65 years ago today, the capital of Poland erupted into counter-revolution against the occupying Nazi German forces. What became known as the Warsaw Uprising lasted 63 days and initially looked set to succeed. But Soviet forces delaying liberation of the city ensured that one of the biggest single civilian massacres of World War II ensued in which an estimated 1/4 million people died and became for decades afterwards recalled as a battle of heroism and folly.

To mark the anniversary of the start of the Uprising on August 1, 1944, Radio ORLA fm has released a programme from our vaults, recorded five years ago and now available to our listeners in the REPLAY section of our website.

The programme is in English and Polish. Special guest Juliusz Englert, who was in the insurrection against the Nazi Germans in 1944.

More documentaries, hosted by George Matlock, will be available on REPLAY soon.
