British-based media helped raise money for a worthy charitable cause this weekend. Both the British Broadcasting Corporation and Radio ORLA helped raise £500 towards the Oncology Clinic in Poznan for the Polish Order of Malta Volunteers.
The Poznan clinic is on the site of the original hospital which the Knights of Malta have run for more than 800 years. And this was one of Poland's oldest hospitals, established by Prince Mieszko Stary and Bishop Radwin in the year 1170, later given to the Order of Malta.
On Saturday night, at an exclusive cabaret ball in London's Mayfair district an charity fundraising auction was held under the auspices of Claire Collini of famous auction house Sotheby's. Media patron Radio ORLA offered Lot number 6 - the chance to record a jingle at our new studios and one a one-hour radio show. The item attracted a winning bid of £200.00.
Meanwhile, Lot 5, a visit to BBC Television Centre and a chance to record a news-reading showreel, attracted a winning bid of £300.00.
George Matlock, director of Radio ORLA, said afterwards: "We were very excited that one of the world's oldest electronic media - the BBC - and one of its youngest - Radio ORLA - met with enthusiastic bids tonight. We listened as £50 suddenly rose to £200 and looked like threatening the BBC's winning bid! We look forward to welcoming the winners to Radio ORLA soon.
"As for the fundraising itself, we are especially delighted to be helping at this time of year, when people are thinking of those less fortunate than themselves and the Christmas cheer needs to be spread widely."
The Polish Association of the Order of Malta is Poland's oldest charitable organisation, derived from the Crusades in Palestine and later the island of Malta. The Order works throughout Poland and in 2008 set up the Polish Order of Malta Volunteers (London) to boost its vital fundraising outside of Poland.
The total amount raised will be known in a few days.
